Winifred E. Koontz

Duanesburg, NY - Winifred E. Koontz, age 78, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and a lifelong love of family, faith, and animals.

Born on August 1, 1947, in Syracuse, NY to Gertrude (Parks) Ezick and Thaddeus Ezick, Winnie was raised on a farm in Lafayette, New York, where her love of animals first took root. As a young girl, she cared for cows, her beloved dog, Sporty and her horse, Sunny and proudly showed her animals through 4-H. Those early experiences shaped a passion that remained with her throughout her life. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1965.

Winnie shared 35 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, William Koontz. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and the home they cherished, Sunny Ridge Farm. There, she lovingly cared for horses, goats, sheep, donkeys, rabbits, cats and dogs. Sunny Ridge Farm was more than a home—it was a reflection of her generous heart and the joy she found in caring for every living creature.

She was a devoted mother to Christy Griffin and Rebecca Gicewicz (Paul), and a proud Nana to Emily Griffin and Avery Griffin, who were among the greatest joys of her life. She also treasured the many nieces and nephews whose lives she was fortunate to be a part of.

During her years as a stay-at-home mother, Winnie generously gave her time to causes that were close to her heart. She volunteered with 4-H, taught Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School, served with Pioneer Girls, and dedicated countless hours to the Columbia-Greene Animal Shelter. Whether working with children or animals, she shared her patience, kindness, and servant's heart with everyone she met.

After her children were grown, Winnie began a career with New York State, from which she later retired. In retirement, she continued to enjoy the simple pleasures that had always brought her happiness, especially spending time with her beloved animals, showing her horses at local horse shows and county fairs, and adding to her cherished Mickey Mouse collection, which always brought a smile to her face.

She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, William Koontz; her daughters, Christy Griffin and Rebecca Gicewicz (Paul); her cherished grandchildren, Emily Griffin and Avery Griffin; her sisters, Carol Wheeler (Lyn) and Jorene Taylor (the late Raymond); and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Winnie will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, deep love of animals, and the compassion she extended to family, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. She lived a life of quiet service, finding joy in caring for others and creating a welcoming home filled with love. Whether tending to the animals at Sunny Ridge Farm, encouraging young people through church and 4-H, or sharing her love of Mickey Mouse with those around her, Winnie made the world a warmer place. Her kindness, strength, and generous heart will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

The family finds comfort in knowing that the legacy of her love and compassion will live on in the lives she touched and in the animals she so faithfully cared for.

A memorial service and celebration of life will take place at a future date in September.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Shelter or Rescue of your choice, in honor of Winnie's lifelong dedication to the care and well-being of animals.
