DELANSON – James C. English, 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Born on March 20, 1945, he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Budna) English.
James proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a member of the Military Police where he was awarded a Purple Heart and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1968. Jim continued his devotion to his country by remaining a lifelong advocate for veterans as a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans, Boyd-Hilton VFW Post 7062 and Purple Heart Foundation.
Deeply committed to his community, James worked for the Town of Duanesburg Highway Department for 28 years. He devoted 15 years to volunteering with the Duanesburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Jimmy or “Big Jim”, as he was known by friends, found great joy in hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Duanesburg Sportsmen Club, where he was well known for his signature “Jimmy Fires”- a gathering place for members at the camp he loved so dearly.
His favorite place was beside a campfire, with his dog on his lap and the love of his life, Carolyn, by his side. He was also an avid gardener who took great pride in tending his gardens and perfecting the landscaping around his home with Carolyn.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his sister, Della Jane Fish.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Carolyn (Elliott) English; his children, Mark (Angela) English of Glenville and Melissa (David) Durrant of Delanson; and his beloved grandchildren, Dennis and Preston Durrant, and Vivian and Alexander English. He is also survived by his sister, Lennea Thompson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at White Van Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main St., Delanson, followed by a funeral service at6:00 p.m. James will be laid to rest with military honors onThursday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m. at Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville. Guests are kindly asked to arrive at the cemetery between 10:45 and 10:55 a.m.
