Colonie- Everett C. Slater Jr., 86, formerly of Delanson, NY and Atria Crossgate in Albany, at rest, Friday, March 13, 2015 at the Albany County Nursing Home.
Everett was born on February 2, 1929 in Schenectady, the son of the late Everett Charles and Alma (Grossmann) Slater. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1947 and served until 1952 in the U.S. Air Force. On July 26,1953, he married the love of his life, Janet, in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Central Bridge. Everett joined the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 106 that same year and worked on various construction sites including the St. Lawrence Seaway, Adirondack Northway and Empire State Plaza until his retirement in 1991. He also worked at Schenectady General Electric's Wire Plant and Foundry, and as a school bus driver for the Duanesburg Central School District. He was a past member of the Delanson Volunteer Fire Department and the Duanesburg Historical Society, an Assistant Pack Leader with the Boy Scouts and attended services at the Delanson Methodist Church.
Everett was the beloved husband of 51 years to the late Janet Alicia (Hoyenga) Slater to whom he was an eternally devoted partner and caregiver. He was the cherished father of Jeffrey (Barbara) Slater of Clifton Park and Linda (William) Hillmann of Voorheesville; adored grandfather of William (Candy) Hillmann of Voorheesville , Laurie Hillmann of Albany, Darryl Slater of New Jersey and Rachel (Tom) Klick of Minnesota; treasured great-grandfather of William, Brianna, Alicia and Lucas Hillmann and Brent Klick; revered brother of Ethel Maziarz, Jean Laino and Jane Jacob, all of CT, Kenneth (Lynne) and David (Carol) Slater, all of Schenectady; and the late Evelyn and Charles Slater. Everett is also survived by two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and lifelong friend from his Rotterdam boyhood, John Mullen of New Jersey.
Throughout his travels, near and far, there was always a new conversation to be had with all he met; no one was a stranger. Likewise, his generosity extended beyond friends and family, to anyone in need of assistance or a lift along the way, even inviting an out-of-state family into his home overnight when their car broke down.
While residing at the nursing home, Everett especially enjoyed the entertainment and activity programs. He was also fond of visits with brother-in-law, Laudlin Hoyenga of Sloansville, discussing stock cars, racing and all things mechanical.
There will be no calling hours for Everett. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Grove Cemetery, Quaker Street .
Everett's family extends special thanks to the dedicated and compassionate staff, at the Albany County Nursing Home and 3 High Rise unit who do so much with so little and in St. Peter's 2 ICU and 5 McAuley, for giving our dad the best possible care and comfort.
